Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity in Relativistic Astrophysics
The international PhD program in Astrophysics, Cosmology, and Gravitation (PPGCosmo) at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) invites researchers to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship within the project “Astrophysics of Compact Objects in the Era of Multimessenger Astronomy”, supervised by Professor Jaziel Goulart Coelho (http://jaziel.cosmo-ufes.org/) and funded by FAPES (Call nº 12/2024 – PROFIX 2024). The position will be hosted at the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology (https://www.cosmo-ufes.org) in Vitória, Brazil.
About the Project:
The project aims to investigate extreme phenomena involving compact objects, such as neutron stars, white dwarfs, and black holes, in the context of multimessenger astrophysics. Research activities include numerical simulations, theoretical modeling, and data analysis focusing on the evolution and merger of compact systems, gravitational wave generation, and high-energy emissions. Collaborations are planned with major international observatories, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTAO), and other top-tier research institutions.
Candidate Profile:
- PhD in Physics, Astrophysics, Astronomy, or related fields;
- Experience in numerical simulations, compact object modeling, or high-energy astrophysics;
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with national and international research groups;
- A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals is considered an asset.
Benefits:
- Monthly fellowship of R$ 6,825 (tax-free) for up to 24 months;
- One-time installation grant of R$ 6,825 (tax-free);
- Additional research funds of up to R$ 40,000 are available to support scientific activities, including the acquisition of equipment and participation in conferences or research visits;
- Access to excellent research infrastructure and an active international collaboration network.
Location:
Vitória, the capital of the state of Espírito Santo, is a vibrant coastal city with a pleasant climate, moderate cost of living, and beautiful beaches. Researchers typically live within walking distance of both the university campus and the seafront, offering an excellent quality of life.
Application:
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, updated CV, and two letters of recommendation to jaziel.coelho@ufes.br
Deadline for applications: July 20, 2025
