ORGANIZATION
Chair: President of SBF, Prof. Celso Pinto de Melo.
The SBF Council appointed two committees to organize the meeting: a Scientific Council and a
Scientific Committee. The Council outlined the general guidelines of the event and approved
the final program. The Scientific Committe is the actual organizer of Física 2011.
Members of the committees:
Scientific Council – Chair Prof. Celso P. de Melo (SBF President)
- Carlos Escobar (Unicamp)
- Fernando Zawislak (UFRGS)
- Luiz Carlos de Menezes (IFUSP)
- Luiz Davidovich (UFRJ)
- Maria Carolina Nemes (UFMG)
- Ricardo Galvão (CBPF)
Scientific Committee – Chair Gastão Krein (SBF General Secretary)
- Belita Koiller (UFRJ)
- Eudenilson de Albuquerque (UFRN)
- Jeferson Arenzon (UFRGS)
- José Andrade Soares (UFC)
- Luiz Nunes de Oliveira (IFSC/USP)
- Marcos Pimenta (UFMG)
- Nathan Berkovits (IFT)
- Paulo Gomes (UFF)
- Paulo Bisch (UFRJ)
- Paulo Nussenzveig (IFUSP)
The Scientific Council recommended that Física 2011 needed to be thought, above all, as a
scientific event, but should have a format substantially different from those of the traditional
topical meetings organized by SBF. The meeting should deepen discussions on key questions,
both on the science and on the challenges confronting the Brazilian physics community with
respect to research infrastructure and human resources. It should also be thought as an
opportunity for the Brazilian Physics community to gather together around the most important
questions of contemporary physics and assess its international insertion in these questions.
This meeting is part of the SBF agenda of seeking a larger integration with the Latin American
physics communities. As such, the city of Foz do Iguaçu, that borders three South American
countries, was a natural choice.
In one joint meeting of the Scientific Council and the Scientific Committee, the main concept of
Fisica 2011 was established and a first scientific program was proposed. In a later meeting of
the Scientific Committee, the format of the conference and a preliminary time-table were
defined. It was decided that the core of the conference would consist of Plenary Talks,
Symposia and Round Tables. The Plenary Talks are common to all attendees, on topics of
widespread interest and delivered by invited speakers of world-wide recognition. The Symposia 1
(or Blue Symposia) are on specialized topics, on interfaces of different areas, tackling on
problems that are focus of worldwide current interest. They occur during one, two or more days
of the conference. The Blue Symposia also deal with problems related to the scientific
infrastructure, human resources and physics teaching. The Round Tables focus on issues of
scientific policy and human resources. The traditional SBF topical meetings on Condensed Matter
Physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics and Field Theory, Physics Teaching, and Plasma Physics
occur in the afternoons and are organized by their respective communities. The Scientific Council
recommended that each topical meeting should also organize symposia, the Symposia 2
(Green Symposia), that are on specialized topics.
